Re your 'about me',I too am not very keen on lending books, but I do give them away, especially fiction. Storage is a problem although I infest two households. When I visit the local charity bookshop (CAFDA) in Cape Town, I make it a rule always to offload more than I buy. I need to visit the cathedral in Durham sometime but this is likely to when the weather gets a little warmer. By that time I should have entered more books and you might see something you fancy.

Good review of The Silent Woman. I can only hope, insanely perhaps, to acquire a library of 12,399 books - I can't imagine where you keep them all! My 1300+ are overwhelming my rather small house and I'm in danger of being found comatose or at least catatonic under one of several piles one day. Looking forward to perusing your library and picking up some good recommendations

It just so happens that I have started to listen to Radio Three. I listen to Radio Four while at work in the Studio and my husband loves to listen to Classic FM (the adverts drive me crazy). Radio Three sounds like it could be a good place for us to listen together.

I've been a R3 listener since the days when it was The Third Programme and The Music Programme. Hardly a day has passed since without my listening to it for at least half an hour (usually longer). It's one of life's few available refuges from the banal and profane. Long may it prosper.

Read your details; thought you might like to check out the site of Irish composer, Roger Doyle = www.rogerdoyle.com.

Roger has actively campaigned against the dumbing down of media/music programming, both as an occasional feature writer in the music press and as broadcaster/presenter on RTE.

His work is always interesting, too ...

Thanks for the invitation to the BBC3 group. I've actually noticed it several times before when looking for a classical music discussion group, but since I live in USA, I don't get BBC radio, and was never sure what the "3" designation really meant. However, I went to their website and looked around and discovered that I can listen online or download podcasts of some programs. I'm going to check that out more closely later - I sometimes have trouble downloading things onto this computer and that problem needs to be addressed. But I definitely want to get that accomplished. My city (population 1 million +) only has one classical station, and it is on AM radio. (Don't get me started - this drives me crazy) The next nearest is an NPR (national public radio - similar to your BBC system, I think) station based at the university an hour's drive away, and reception is spotty.

I had to smile when reading your profile, above. I don't blame you for not wanting to loan out your books and music. If I come to your home, will you invite me in and ply me with refreshments while I browse and sample what you have? :-)

Hello, Antimuzak, I'm new to LibraryThing and expect to add my classical compact discs (probably 2500-3000) over time. The site is clearly geared towards books; this is not a complaint, but it could be a limitation. You have added a large number of recordings. Which cataloging sources have you found most useful? In my brief experience, the Library of Congress and the British Library are the best sources for this data. But have you found others? Any advice you might give to a novice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the invite to the BBC3 group. I'll decline, as I haven't listened to it via the airwaves or internet for some years now. I did quite enjoy it during some brief stays in London between 1999 and 2003. Honestly, most of my music listening these days is whilst driving my truck to work, and the selections are all over the musical spectrum depending on whether I need more coffee or therapy ;)

I'm curious what triggered your invite - was it adding my copy of Copland's "What to Listen For in Music"?

Thank you for the invitation to BBC Radio 3. I am pleased to accept, although I may do little but lurk. I am listening to Radio 3 at the moment and sound pretty good on the rather limited speakers of the laptop I am using. Living in the Washington-Baltimore area I am fortunate to have access to WETA also online), a PBS station dedicated to classical music and on trips to Baltimore I can receive a good classical station from there. The West Virginia PBS station often has good classical programs. I suspect I will have Radio 3 on while browsing through Librarything.

I note we have some books in common; you have a large collection of children's books. which comprise a good part of my collection.

I find it interesting that as I type in my orchestral recordings on vinyl, I'm starting to match up to the same recordings in your library. I didn't think anyone else was being exact in their cataloging. You must have a good collection of out-of-print music. It looks like a have a lifetime of music hunting to look forward to, now that people are dumping their vinyl collection into the thrift stores. I'll have to browse your library and see what's out there.

Thank you for the invitation and I applaud your efforts. Classical music programs on American Public Radio used to run around the clock with the exception of morning and evening news reports. Now there is one late night music program left on one out of three area stations. The rest is news and talk and interviews; interesting stuff in small doses but troubling to the spirit when never-ending. Best of luck.

I 'do' listen to CBC Radio 2.
However, as they are supposedly further diminishing their classical content to a period of 10AM to 3PM in the near future, I may have to look for an alternative.

Hello antimuzak! I hope you don't mind me adding your library to my "Interesting libraries" list (at long last). I'm realising that besides helping me remember what I've read, this feature may help me identify even more interesting books that I won't have time to read!

Thanks as well for having created the R3 group. I listened to Sunday's Private Passions (Colin Low), a show I rarely catch, yesterday at work and it was just superb. I haven't stopped listening to the Godowsky studies since then and I must get hold of some of the less well-known English songs. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for inviting me to the BBC Radio 3 Listeners Group - I'm intrigued to know why you thought this would be of interest to me as I have only catalogued my books and not the 2,000 or so CDs that I own! As about 700 are classical I feel you may be somewhat psychic. I do listen now and again but sometimes feel it's a bit on the heavy side for me but perhaps it's now time to give it another chance?

What a wonderful library, antimuzak. I've been browsing your Biographies looking for a Schubert bio. I see you have many of course. Would you be able to recommend one or two for the "layperson". I enjoy works which put the subject into the context of his or her times - what else was going on in their country during their lifetime, perhaps some minutiae of every-day, domestic life, etc. I am not a musicologist, just a lover of music. I hope asking this is not presuming too much.

Also I see you are a BBC 3 enthusiast. You might be interested in having a look at 2mbs.com which is a Sydney, volunteer run, FM station with some excellent programming.

I am sorry to hear that the BBC 3 too is threathened. Our "Danmarks Radio" (http://www.dr.dk/) is suffering severe cuts at the moment too. They have to pay for the political decision to build a grand new Radio House by cutting down lots of interesting programs, the cuts being in sad keeping with the already prevailing tendency to cut programme that lasts more than 30 minutes, especially when it is a spoken word programme without music. There is today hardly a programme without annoying "jingles" (the muzak of serious radio).

I was interested and impressed to look at your library. I have added your library to my interesting libraries. I only started cataloguing our book collection about two months ago but I can see that we already share 49 of our (at present 1220) books with you!

Thank you for your invitation to join the BBC3 Listeners group. To be honest: the last years I hardly listen to BBC3 anymore. This is because in Paris I cannot receive the channel on the waves - and I am very oldfashioned and donot listen to music on my computer (nor do I download movies). I must be one of those fossiles who still don't have ADSL...
But in the '70s and '80s I was unconditionally faithful to BBC3. I can even say BBC3 has been one of the great experiences of my life. Even now I remember (30 years afterwards!)some names of the BBC team: Patricia Hughes, Victor Hallam,....
So to conjure my regrets, and to express symbolically my admiration I have immediately registered upon your invitation.
By the way: I adore many forms of music (being also antimuzak!). But I have decided not to include music recordings (or scores) in my LT catalogue. It will be big enough with books alone.

I'm not a huge music listener, but I see that they broadcast theater - totally up my alley! In fact British dramas (and audiobooks) are among my favorites. Thanks for your kind welcome. By all means post away. You can always do that unless I indicate otherwise. Still busy logging my library so little time for visiting group pages. Should be through before the end of next month. Have to spend the first half of Nov. in UK during which I will suffer terribly from librarything withdrawal symptoms. At least R3 will be on tap, wonderful music at Westminster Cathedral and will also see the new production of 'Shadowlands'in the West End.

Must tell you about France Musique which is the equivalent of R3 here. Sometimes it's stunningly better and sometimes stunningly worse but on the whole across any one week has the same depth and versatility. Also very good for the French musical vocab. Will report the next wonderful thing I hear and the worst. The French presenters sometimes have difficulty with the names of British and American musicians and one has to have one's ears peeled if one wants to know who's performing. Who is Sclon Da Vees for instance? That being said he's very popular here because of his devotion to Berlioz. And what about Le Narde Slat Keen and Sharle Mucker- Ass?

Thank you for your invitation to join the Radio 3 group. Until June it was one of three things I miss about UK, one of the others being good strong Cheddar cheese. But a new epicerie has recently opened in our tiny village here in France Profonde and mirabile dictu, Monsieur Joachim gets huge blocks for me farm produced in England. All the local supermarket has (8 kms away) is spongy Double Gloucester masquerading as Cheddar. The French Buyer doesn't know the difference! The French generally think they are the only nation who can make cheese.I'm working on Monsieur for a supply of smoked back bacon and then when I've had my satellite dish fixed I'll be able to access R3 through my digibox and make more relevant postings to the group rather than going on about cheese!

An early and treasured memory of R3 when it was still The Third Programme is the series 'Talking About Music' with Anthony Hopkins. Billiant and so educative in an absorbing entertaining way. It would be wonderful to hear them again. They must still be in the Archives.(What happened to him? Does anyone know whether he's still alive?) Years ago my husband was in one of our local pubs in London when an extremely beautiful Brazilian girl came in asking if anyone knew where Anthony Hopkins lived. At the time the actor Anthony Hopkins was still living with his first wife in the street round the corner and my husband assumed she meant him. However, to his astonishment it transpired she was after the music AH, of whom nobody else in the pub had ever heard.

Hi Antimuzak, thanks for the invitation. I love BBC 3 and have read many of the threads. Unfortunately, when ever I try to listen to Radio 3 on my mac, it never works! I don't know, I maybe don't have the right player or something. I usually give up in frustration and put on a CD!
any advice you can give to help me listen in more often would be great!

BBC radio 3 is just about the only thing I miss about the UK! (and the National Portrait Gallery).
I really like your tag name, BTW. Muzak is EVERYWHERE in Taiwan where I live and it drives me crazy! Why cant' they play Bach at the gym, in the elavator etc?

Dear antimuzak, many thanks (only 4 months later!) for the invitation - I did join immediately. I get to listen to BBC R3 & R4 regularly over the Internet, though it requires perseverance after our national telecom company got renationalised. On irregular visits to the UK I am always impressed just how fortunate UK residents are to have the BBC (I'm thinking radio and Internet rather than TV as I don't watch it, though I know the BBC Natural History Unit is still something to be proud of) instead of the garbage we largely have to depend on in this part of the world. Indeed, sindicated BBC news has become one of the best ways for residents here to get unbiased news. Let's hope the UK government will some day wake up to the fact that a commitment to maintaining (and improving, why not?) the BBC would be a better investment than any of the alternatives. The BBC is clearly a very cost effective way of educating and informing and, as they say, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Thanks again! Chris

I also do not list it unless I own it, & have learned all too well the lesson not to loan books.(Have you ever noticed that it is the people that say they would NEVER dream of keeping one, that do not return them?)

Thanks for the invitation. I have never actually listened to BBC radio though. I do concur heartily on your stance toward book lending. I absolutely refuse to lend books even to my children. They never return. I have replaced some books six and seven times and I refuse to do it again. The prices are always higher the next time. I too own all the books I have listed but will never manage to amass as many as you.

Thank you for the invitation! I recently read Stephen Fry´s humorous take on the history of classical music - evidently taken from a series on BBC3 - so that´s how I knew about that radio channel! I´m in Sweden, by the way. I love classical music and I once had serious plans of becoming an opera-singer myself, so this is right up my alley!

I agree with what you wrote about it "being an oasis of intelligence and real culture in an increasingly dumbed down world" because it´s so sad to see what kind of "music" and performers are being popular these days.....Britney Spears, anyone?!

Thanks for the invite. I must confess I haven't listened to Radio 3 very much but having read the group info I am very keen to check it out. The only problem is I have a digital radio and don't know how to tune it. What can I say I am a technophobe!

You have a very interesting site, we have quite a few books in common especially considering I don't have many in my library yet.

Have you really written all those reviews yourself! (I'm trying to think of a witty comment that you must be a prolific writer or really old or really sad but it all sounds a bit insulting sorry).

I am with you about the lending friends books theory, there seems to be an unwritten law somewhere which makes people assume if you lend them a book they do not have to give it back. I am always very careful now not to lend out my favourite books as they are like old friends to me and I want to see them again.

I'm very busy entering all my books on the site right now, and as any true music lover, I can't listen to music and do something that requires concentration at the same time, so I'll try later. Thank you so much for the invitation. I would never have thought to hunt out BBC Radio 3 on my own. I've got very soothing classical music playing right now while I catch up on email, etc. Much more fitting end to a harried day than something rock & roll.

Thanks for the invite, my experience of Radio 3 is generally from the podcast but tune in for the drama sometimes but have been trying to tune in more often!

Thanks for the invite. I'm not actually a BBC Radio listener, at least not yet. I'm in the US, so i'd have to tune in online; but Isee there are a few other Yanks and Canadians on here. I accept, and will try to listen via the web. I also listen to NPR and the local (but dying fast) classical/arts stations.

Thank you for inviting me! I lived in England for 4 years and now that I've returned to the US, Radio3 is one of the things I miss the most. Thank goodness I can stream it over the web.

It never occurred to me that I'd find a group on LibraryThing!

Thank you, Radio 3 has escaped my attention until now. Though my library might not show it (overmuch), I was into classical music for more than 20 yrs (even got some serious money out of it, at times). But then I moved on, i.e., from active performance to listening only---in order to get some different things done in life for a change, LOL! I'll check it out and will get back to you and your offer. ^_^J.

Thanks for the invitation. I listen to BBC 3 (and many classical stations from Europe) over the Internet (and CBC in the car). My spouse has hooked one of our computers up to the stereo system so we can hear every crackle. I'm not sure what there is to discuss, particularly as it relates to our reading collections, but we shall see!

Thanks for the invite to join the Radio 3 group. I'm pleased to accept but I generally listen to Radio 4 as I'm less often in the mood for serious music listening. I currently sometimes catch some of "Night Waves" but I will promise to make a conscious effort to tune in to 3 more frequently. I share you abhorrence of muzak in public places. How anyone can actually shop in HMV or Virgin stores is beyond me. The cacophony makes rational thought, let alone contemplation, well nigh an impossibility. I'd be interested in your recommendations for contemporary classical music.

I've never listened to BBC3; I'd try to tune in via the Internet, but since I'm still using dial-up (!!) at home in New York, I don't know how well that would work out.
